Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: Support for Windows 10 will officially end on October 14, 2025. While your PC will continue to operate, Microsoft will cease providing essential security updates and technical support, leaving your system vulnerable to risks.

Why Business Owners Must Take Action

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without continual updates, your devices become prime targets for viruses, malware, and cyberattacks. Protecting your business data means upgrading to the latest Windows OS is essential.
  • Software Compatibility Challenges: Newer software versions often require current operating systems to function properly. When Windows 10 is no longer supported, critical applications may malfunction or fail to run.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses managing sensitive data must meet compliance standards. Running outdated OS software can jeopardize compliance, potentially leading to costly fines or legal issues.

What Are Your Upgrade Options?

Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 ahead of the end-of-support deadline. However, not all hardware currently running Windows 10 meets the stringent requirements of Windows 11, leading to upgrade errors on incompatible PCs.

If your PC cannot support Windows 11, consider these options:

  • Purchase a new, Windows 11-compatible PC
  • Enroll in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program
  • Switch to a Linux operating system alternative
  • Continue with Windows 10 despite risks (not advised)

Always ensure you have a complete backup of your files before making any system changes to safeguard your data.

Understanding Extended Security Updates (ESU)

If immediate upgrading isn't feasible, Microsoft's ESU program offers temporary security updates for Windows 10, but only for one year post end-of-support.

You can register for ESU by paying a fee of $30 or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. There is also a no-cost option requiring enabling Windows Backup and syncing files to OneDrive's free 5 GB cloud storage (additional storage may be needed).

Don't delay: Registration for ESU must be completed before October 14, 2025.
